A classically trained busy London born pianist. His diverse career in jazz and popular music includes encounters with Elton John, Phil Collins, Diana Dors, Solomon King, Larry Adler, Eric Burdon, Steve Winwood, Big Chief and Chas and Dave.
Phil names Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett as major stylistic influences. Has played at Brecon, Bute, Bude, Cork, Swanage, Richmond, Pontypool, Edinburgh and Greenwich Jazz Festivals, toured extensively in UK & Ireland as band leader supporting Pat Crumly, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Mornington Lockett, Henry Lowther, Don Rendell, Harry Beckett, Duncan Lamont, Gilad Atzmon, Simon Bates, Jo Fooks , Willie and Alex Garnett, Don Weller, Dick Pearce, Art Themen, Christian Brewer, Kelvin Christian, and currently works regularly with the Ben Cummings Big Beat quintet, Kit Packham’s One Jump Ahead, The Mardi Gras Band, Nick Page, Julia Farino, Sandra Lawrence, Graham Pike Quartet and the Sue Rivers Band. London hotel work has included residences at The Bonnington, The Gloucester, and The Dorchester, Café de Paris, The Savoy and he had a long association with China Jazz restaurants.
Alex has backed many artists including Tony Coe, Jim Mullen, Henry Lowther, Alan Barnes, Jimmy Hastings, Pete King, John Etheridge and Eddi Reader and has toured the UK extensively with the Theo Travis Quartet and the Philip Clouts Quartet. While studying at the Guildhall he accompanied George Shearing in a piano masterclass for the South Bank Show. Alex works with the Dick Pearce / Frances Knight Quartet, Viper’s Dream, Julian Costello Quartet, Graham Pike Quartet, Sophie Smiles, The Fabulations and the Keen/Osgerby Trio backing Anita Wardell, Trudy Kerr and Kai Hoffman.
