The Limehouse Gypsy Trio, led by Maurizio Minardi on accordion, performs Gypsy jazz repertoire, including Django Reinhardt, swing and old jazz
TBased in London since 2008, the Italian composer, pianist and accordionist Maurizio Minardi completed his studies in piano, organ and composition at the Conservatorio di Musica 'Giovan Battista Martini' Bologna. He also gained a certificate in Musicology at DAMS (Drama, Art and Music Studies) Università di Bologna.
As founder, composer and arranger for the jazz-tango group 'Quartetto Magritte' and the electronic group 'Oz', Minardi has recorded and produced four and three albums respectively. In 2011, he also produced and released the orchestral-electronic album *Works* to critical acclaim, while in 2012 he released his jazz album *My Piano Trio*, recorded at Livingston Studios, London.
Minardi released his ninth studio album in March 2013, recorded in London with Nick Pini on double bass, Jason Reeve and Marco Quarantotto on drums, and Shirley Smart on cello. Entitled The Cook, the Clown, the Monk and the Accordionist, a parody of Greenaway's The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover, the music has a cinematic quality reminiscent of composers such as Nino Rota, Yann Tiersen, René Aubry, Michael Nyman, Ennio Morricone and Sakamoto. Each piece of music tells a story and the album is defined by a daring and unique combination of genres from baroque to minimalist jazz fired up with splashes of tango and rumba.
Minardi performs with his trio and other artists including Carmen Souza, Antonio Forcione, Paolo Fresu, Enrico Rava, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Maciek Pysz, Asaf Sirkis, Brandon Allen, Quentin Collins and Yuri Goloubev. Minardi has played at a number of festivals including Acordeoes do Mundo (PT), Caldas Nice Jazz (PT), Umbria Jazz (IT) and Mantova Music Festival (IT), and at many venues including Pizza Express Jazz Club, the Royal Albert Hall Ignite Series, the National Theatre Foyer, Upstairs at Ronnie Scott's, the Apollo Hammersmith, the Vortex Jazz Club and Blue Note Poznan (PL). British DJ Paul Murphy mixed and released Minardi's song 'Malanotte' on his Afro Art Records label. The album *Tangology* released by Rai Italian televisionfeatures Minardi's songs inspired by the tango.
